Out of the box, where your feet are, the tape goes all the way up on the left side from front to back and doesn't tape back. The rear leg rest is detachable and requires a longer axle and some dexterity. Our kids don't like the rear foothold because they're banging their foot against it all the time while running, so it makes sense why they don't set it up ahead of time. Everything else with the scooter looks pretty solid.
