I bought this to start making my own connection cables for my guitar gear and pedals. I've never been good with a soldering iron, but before that I only had a super cheap RadioShack iron. It had no temperature control, it didn't have a handy holder to mount it etc. I bought it hoping that a better iron would help me solder better and it really does. Soldering, when done correctly, is a really quick and delicate process. If you're worried about putting everything back when you're done or struggling with a cable that's not long enough, prepare for failure. Soldering isn't all that difficult, but unless you have a good iron that's easy to use, you're going to be in trouble. As for the temperature control, it might smack that it doesn't show actual temperature, but you get what you pay for and this setup is very economical. I've read that even some of the more expensive devices that have temperature readings are not very accurate. So I would recommend checking the temperature controls for the purpose you are using them for. Start with low settings (e.g. two) and see if that works. It should melt the solder fairly quickly, but not instantly. If necessary, gradually increase the temperature depending on the application. As for me, I found that most of my work required a temperature setting of 5. Either way, this is a great little device, especially for the price. Hope it lasts long!
