Review on LMT Onsrud 63-701 Uncoated CNC Router Bit - Optimal Diameter by Aquarium Lanter

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Expensive. But the price is worth it

I have tried several inexpensive .0625" carbide end mills to cut .25", .125" and .050" thick ABS sheet, and it was a clear winner by a wide margin. It cuts faster with a .13" deep plunge cut at 45 ipm and 18,000 rpm. I can probably push it faster. The chips are slightly larger and fully formed as opposed to fine ones Chips at each feed rate with other bits There is no noticeable heating of the bit so heat appears to be dissipated to the chips Even at full speed there is very little bit deflection so cut size is maintained and surface quality is excellent The chip recovery is phenomenal, preventing a nest of chip birds from forming on the bit, which is critical for fabrication jobs where the CN C program can run unattended for up to two hours. This is the only bit I found. It allows me to step away from the machine. Others have asked me to stop the machine every few parts, turn off the spindle, and pull a small ball of fluffy plastic off the bit, or worse, pull a hardened, melted ball of plastic off the blade. The excellent chip recovery also results in excellent surface finish of the cut parts as the chips are never reworked. I hate paying that much money for such a tiny piece of carbide, but it's definitely worth it. If you have a production shop, don't even bother with cheap parts. Yes, they work, but not like this!
