The metal has sharp edges.
They're nice enough and for the price I paid they're not bad. My biggest problem with them is that the light inside is so bright that they have to be far away, high up or in a place with other objects (maybe part of the central part) because the light is blinding. As for the gifting materials, I've changed my mind, they just look too cheap to give away. I think you could probably buy them at Family Dollar for $10.
