Review on πŸ”¦ GE Advantage Fluorescent Workbench - High-Performance 16547 by Julian Banks

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Cheap - Defective - Tedious installation

UPDATE REVIEW: The unit was returned to Revain and as I could not find another fluorescent lamp of the same size the same unit was purchased a second time. Just a reminder, the cables that come with this unit are VERY short. This means that the cables coming from your power supply must be tucked "inside" the case. Typical household wiring consists of strong copper wire that does not bend easily, making it incredibly difficult to install wires AND "twist wire caps" inside the enclosure. I ended up paying the electrician $85 to install it because I couldn't. Even HE had problems with short cables and ended up not being able to place the power supply cables and screw caps inside the case and the installation was not flush with the case bottom. Bad design. I DO NOT RECOMMEND PURCHASING. PREVIOUS REVIEW: Installation wasn't that easy. You'll have to disassemble it to install and then reassemble it to proceed. By attaching the part that contains the light, ballast and wiring. If you don't have a drill, a set of bits, a set of ratchets and sockets and a small to medium screwdriver from Philip, you're going to have a hard time. A small crescent wrench might work, but will be a major headache. FIRST they designed this thing with wire cutouts in the wrong places, like none in the middle; There is one on the side and two on the back, but neither is in the middle of the back of the instrument. If you're replacing an old light fixture and your cords come out of the dead center of the wall between the cabinets, you'll need to drill a new hole in the back center of the light fixture or install it off-center. Adjust the cutouts on the bracket! There are only three wires, easy right? Black, white and earth but they are all very short. Connect them all securely, cover them with lids, making sure nothing is exposed, then screw them to the bottom of the cabinet. (The thing came without instructions, by the way) Finally, everything is twirled and twirled. It's time to insert the fluorescent tube, reinsert the plastic lens and turn it on. I flip the switch and BAM! What now? I triple checked EVERYTHING before installing it in the closet. I turned off the wall switch and carefully disassembled it to see if any of the wires had somehow come loose during installation. When I removed the last screw holding it to the bottom of the cabinet. I very, very SLOWLY removed the portion exposing the wiring. Expect one of the wires to come loose. NO! All three wires were properly connected, secured and not exposed in any way. Black on black, white on white, earth on earth. I can only assume that the ballast was defective. I sent it back and am currently buying another brand. I thought GE should be good but I don't think they make more of it. Another company does this under the GE name. Much luck!

Pros
  • Easy installation
Cons
  • There are more interesting options.
