Review on Nikon 16mm f/2.8D AF FX Fisheye-NIKKOR Fixed Lens with Auto Focus for Nikon DSLR Cameras by Darrell Bridges

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Super fun lens in Lens

It's a great ultra wide angle lens, really good clarity compared to others, great build quality and the f/2.8 aperture is great in low light and to get some bokeh. Autofocus is snappy and fast, as it should be with something this wide. Of course, this AF-D lens is powered by the INNER CAMERA focus motor, so make sure it's compatible. I have used this lens on both full frame and crop sensor cameras. While it looks like a fisheye lens on my full-frame D700, I like it even better on my cropped D90, where it morphs into a 24mm lens. If you have a cropped sensor and have been wanting an ultra wide-angle lens for a long time, you should consider this lens. I also have a Nikon 10-24mm and a Nikon 20mm AF-D and on a cropped sensor this lens is very similar to the 20mm on the FF in that the worst distortions are cropped at the edges. This lens is probably cheaper than other ultra-wide alternatives, especially considering the 2.8 aperture. The assembly is excellent, metal and durable. The front element is a big problem for some, protruding enough to require a special lens cap and being too bulky to use standard filters. There is a risk of damage with rough adjustments, as with 14-24 2.8. I found the cap that came with it fit quite well, snug fitting but easy to remove, although I know some people modify it for a more secure fit. This lens has a fun system for attaching filters to the rear element. It comes with a clear filter installed and there are other color options. The filter can be removed if accuracy is critical. Great lens. Small, strong, fast, wide.
