TL;DR: Too tall so standard trash bags fall in; the protective rim around the bottom fell off after a month; too narrow so you can't fit many normal pieces of trash (like take-out boxes) in it; Odor protection is okay but not great; motion detection is okay, but less functional in dark spaces.Okay, I had been wanting to get a decent motion detector trash can for ages, and we were moving in to our new home, so I was ready to bit the bullet. It got to my house, and I unpacked it and it was pretty simple to put together. I put the first trash bag in, and plopped a small (but a little heavy) piece of garbage in it. Oof--the standard sized trash bag doesn't reach to the bottom, and the whole thing fell in. I thought--that will be okay; once I secure the lid in place it will hold it up. My illusions were shattered after a few more pieces of trash--the lid was not tight enough to hold the bag up. Why on earth would a 13 gallon trash can not hold a 13 gallon trash bag?!That was annoying, but it wasn't a deal breaker. We just started taking the trash out a little more often, before it was so heavy that it made the bag fall. I put the can in the chosen spot and we started using it consistently for a while. We noticed another problem due to the chosen location (also the only reasonable location for the trash can in the house--the laundry cupboard behind the kitchen). The new problem was that the motion sensor didn't always work in the dark. Sometimes it would after a couple of passes--but most of the time I had to turn on the cupboard light to get the sensor to see me. Also not a deal breaker, but very annoying, and defeats the purpose of a motion-sensor trash can. Then, we started being frustrated by how narrow the opening of the can is. We couldn't fit some of our regular trash in due to the size. We ended up having a separate (uncanned) trash bag for things like take-out boxes, bulky drink containers (non-recyclable ones), standard packaging, etc. Okay--so why do I want to have a trash can that won't contain my trash? Well, I don't.On top of that, the narrow size meant that when the bag was full, pulling it out of the can was really difficult--sometimes it caused the bag to tear, and we had to get a fresh bag to contain that torn bag. Not convenient or economical. So, all in all, this trash can might be good in a well-lit small space in a home where they don't use trash over 12 inches wide or 16 ounces in weight. But here, in the land of take out and energy savings, it's just not okay.
