If it doesn't work with a VGA monitor, connect all cables to the computer.

Trying to use this with a Viewsonic VGA VA 702b monitor. I could not get a picture until I connected the USB and audio adapter to the computer (Lenovo ThinkCentre M700 Core i7-6700T with HDMI only). The monitor doesn't have speakers, so it might not matter what looks like an audio adapter. Be sure to connect the USB cable to the USB port of the PC.
