Review on πŸ“€ Iomega 31119 Predator 4x4x6 External USB CD-RW Drive: Efficient Solution for External CD Writing by Josh Cooper

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Unsatisfactory for CD and DVD drives

This new Iomega unit looks great right out of the box - it's top loading, so inserting and removing CDs is much easier. Also, I was initially impressed - it's about a third smaller than the last CD-RW I tried. In addition, the immediate benefits are that the software is quick and easy to install and the USB interface is easily accessible. And since it's so light I thought it would be a great addition to my new laptop. Unfortunately, this CD-RW suffers from the problem that it's not possible to burn a complete CD without one of those dreaded "buffer underrun" problems. . A very rude Iomega support rep told me it was because the hard drive was too fragmented or didn't have enough space. However, I have a brand new HP laptop with a clean install of Windows 2000, an almost empty 20 gigabyte 800Mhz hard drive, so it's unlikely that the problem is related to the laptop's lack of power. Pretty bad time with Iomega Technical Support. I spoke to two unfriendly people who also didn't know their way around very well. They suggested writing in 2x instead of 4x. Not only did this not work, it seemed unlikely to fix it - why buy a 4x recorder when it can only work at 2x? I was also referred to a [website] for a solution that I've been looking for for half an hour and still can't find. To be honest I understand that laptops are trickier than desktops and external devices are harder to come by than internal ones and this isn't the first CD-RW I've tried that I've been disappointed with. However, based on previous experiences with Iomega Zip drives, I was expecting better quality, especially since I spent more money on the brand name. Unfortunately, I'm destined to return to the store and try my luck elsewhere.
