Fair but could be better

This is for the original "Radio Shark". I tried searching for "Radio Shark 2" but none of them were available everywhere I searched. I understand there were some fixes in the second generation device, but note that both use the same software and essentially work the same. The device is a bit bigger than I expected, but that doesn't make me dissatisfied with it. I think I was just imagining a "thinner" sail, but it's actually about a half inch thick and about eight inches high. Setting it up in WinXP was trivial. Setting it up in Win7 (on my laptop) was more of a challenge, but once it's done everything works great. However, there is a HUGE area for improvement. and that's because it completely lacks integration with Windows Media Center. With three other devices available with built-in FM tuners for the media center, I was hoping this would allow access to both AM and FM tuners, but that's not the case. The included software works pretty well, if not particularly "glossy". The main problem in Win7 was figuring out why I had no sound. This is not a device defect but a problem with how Win7 (and presumably Vista) handles audio devices. You'll basically need to set up the device if it's connected through Windows 7's Sound Settings panel. The instructions don't show how to do this, but you can (at least for now) find this information fairly easily using Google. If you want AM radio on your computer, there aren't any other options currently, as far as I know. And it works pretty well. I set it to record some of my favorite talk shows during the day so I can listen to them at night. And these recordings can be listened to with any media player (including those that come with Windows, such as Media Center). The reception is just great. not"semipro" quality, but adequate. FM reception can be boosted if desired by connecting an optional external antenna (I bought this for the Bose Wave radio which works great but you can easily plug in headphones and get much better reception). a little!). I don't really need the booster from the extra antenna just yet, but I have it if I ever need it. In general I am satisfied. I just want to control it via WMC like the FM tuners on my Hauppauge sets.

Pros
  • Nice
Cons
  • Good but not great
