Unless you start a new aquarium without a decorative layer of inert substrate to prevent nutrients from penetrating the water layer, I would recommend washing off the sand. If you're adding directly to an aquarium that already has sand in it, I recommend rinsing the sand. If you want to use this as a demo which I decided to use you can put it straight into the tank and then slowly add water after the mist clears after a few days. Those who complain of it clogging up the tank didn't wait for it to settle and probably filled it straight in without slowly lowering the bottom. When it comes to hobbies, the aquarist is usually to blame, not the product.
