I bought this aquarium for my wife as a Christmas present. Little did I know this "starter kit" was just the beginning of a new hobby! I've found this to be a great place to start for those wanting to have a tropical aquarium, but be aware that you'll need a lot more things in the future! First, let's see what's included in the kit: - Aquarium. Good size, not too small and not too big - fixed temperature water heater - thermometer inserted into the tank from OUTSIDE. Not the best, but it gets the job done. - Filter with a filter bag (you must replace it monthly). Once upon a time there were very well coordinated ornamental plants. Most of them are pretty fake looking and ugly and we'll probably be replacing them. The exception is the sea anemone, which is very cute - A small flake, enough to feed your fish for several days Aquarium - ColorFusion lights (in my kit). Very cool. You have to long press the button to turn it off and when you plug it back in you have to press the button to turn it on (so I can't use the timer in the socket). The button toggles between rotating colors or "pause" in one color. So if you want to jump to a specific color, you have to put it in rotation mode and then stop at the color you want. A NOTICE. I was really confused as the instructions seemed to indicate that some "regular" lights were included in addition to the ColorFusion bulbs. This is not the case: if you buy the ColorFusion kit, you only get these lights. Okay, now we come to what is not yet included and you need to start with the aquarium: - Gravel. I bought four packs of these: Glofish Aquarium Gravel, black with fluorescent highlights, 5 lb bags, 20 lb total and that was enough for me. Some sites recommend 30lbs, it depends on how many inches you want. Gravel is needed for beneficial bacteria to live, so don't miss out on buying it! Also, I found that local pet stores sell it for less than Revain, probably due to the weight of the item, the fish. I personally liked the idea of getting GloFish, although I know some people don't like the idea of genetically engineered fish. If you also get GloFish, try to get at least 5 so they can "go to school". Then there are a few more things you need to buy within 1-2 weeks of receiving the aquarium: - Fish food. You'll need to get some extra tropical flakes if you run out of the original food. After a while you need to start changing the water. The new water must be safe for the fish. I have this conditioner: Tetra 16213 AquaSafe Plus Water Conditioner, 16.90oz, 500ml for my aquarium. - More decorations. You will quickly find that the supplied decoration is not enough. We bought some shellfish, coral and long plants to give the fish more places to hide and explore - strips or a water testing kit. You'll need this to test the water quality if you don't take it to the store. I personally got the kit (API Freshwater Master Test Kit) but if you prefer "quick and easy" some test strips might be better. decorations) to prevent dirt or harmful chemicals from entering the aquarium - Do not overfeed. It seems really bad. Based on my internet reading, determining the right amount of food seems to be more of an art than a science. Right now I'm doing 3 flakes per fish twice a day, which seems to work well. After a few days the water became a bit milky. I've been told this is normal and is due to the good bacteria working in freshwater and also because I planted too many fish to begin with. It should clear itself. After another two weeks I see that the color is getting better (less milky). All in all this gift was a blast and my wife and kid LOVED it. You can see a picture of how it looks today and hopefully for some time to come!
