It's definitely not soft foam stuff!
Two great features make it perfect for your really old dog. 1) Looks like an exquisite piece of furniture, so it fits well in any room of the house. VERY durable and well built. Definitely outlasts the dog. 2) The height of individual steps is shorter than all others. When the old lady "Lulu" tried it for the first time, I could tell from the look on her face that she liked it. Easier stair climbing is ideal if an older dog is showing signs of arthritis in the hips. Yes, it costs a little more, but it's worth every penny. ask lulu
