The cleaning side is just plastic Velcro hooks. It scrapes off some of the algae, but not as thoroughly. I have an Equeon 2.5 gallon tank and I'm a little worried about scratching it since the tank is plastic and not glass. However, I haven't noticed any scratches. I've only had it a few weeks and have only ever used it on the back of the tank to check for scratches. Like I said, it doesn't work that well. You have to repeatedly rub in circular motions and up and down movements to get everything, and even then. It is fine with its function.
