It broke during installation. Stainless steel is much softer than hardened steel. The nut is screwed on and lightly tightened by hand. So I know it's not a cross thread. About 1/2 inch past the end of the thread it became difficult to turn and broke. Never tightened enough to stop the rattling. But like I said, there were still a lot of threads left to make it a little tighter. So if it hadn't caught in some kind of trap and broke it might have dragged on enough to work. But I don't recommend it. Because if it were to break that easily, any load, like a pendant, could stretch or break it. I would recommend using hardened steel and only dealing with potential rust.
