The box was taped with tape; I (correctly) suspected something was broken

The box was glued together; I (correctly) suspected that something was broken. In fact, one of the legs was broken. My guess is that the supplier received the return, somehow put everything back in the box and shipped it back to me as is. Maybe they figured that sooner or later someone would fix the broken part because that would be less of a problem than sending it back. You were right - I had just the right clamp - and now it's fixed. But even if this heater turns out to be excellent, I'll still be surly and resentful.
