This lens works with the Canon EOS R

I just bought this lens for my EOS R. I was a little nervous when I heard some people saying it wouldn't work. I also called Tamron's service center and was told the lens was considered "not 100% fully functional on the EOS R" and was advised to look at other lenses they approved. However, I've also heard that this will work, but there may be functional issues when using lens aberration correction. In any case I don't use any of these settings as I use DXO Photolab 2 which fixes everything perfectly. I also asked the guy at the camera shop to test them on the EOS R before sending them to me. So, I got the lens, turned it on and it works almost perfectly. The only thing I've found is that in very low light and at 300mm you might not want to lock focus, but then my Canon 28-135 is only marginally better in that situation. Otherwise he is perfect. My copy has good sharpness, at least on par with my Canon 28-135. So I have to say I'm very happy with it. Another thing is that Photolab 2 removes distortion, chromatic aberration etc so well that all images look from very good to great. It's funny though, because if you click the compare button with the original uncorrected photo, the difference can be pretty obvious, especially the barrel distortion at 28mm. Build quality is on par with the best metal-frame EF-S lenses. It runs very smoothly and looks very nice. And it's small and light. It's not the fastest lens, but it works for me. For the money, the wide zoom range and single throw solution is great. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, but just in case, buy it from a camera shop and bring your EOS R camera to make sure it works properly, or at least if you're like me with online sales busy try it guys in store to try it out for you on R. As this is the only reasonably priced long range zoom I just had to try it and am very glad I did. EDIT: It has been shipped to Tamron twice since I bought this lens 13 months ago. The first time it was sent for a firmware update to make it 100% compatible with Canon EOS R cameras. After I returned it it got better but it had a problem where sometimes it didn't even try, turned on to focus for the first time. After a while it got worse and it seemed to me like the lens had somehow jammed or the focus motor had failed. I sent the lens back a second time and they completely overhauled the lens with a new focus motor. I think when they first took the lens apart to reprogram it, something was assembled incorrectly. They flip these lenses in less than 2 weeks so they're pretty quick. So it's been over 3 months now and everything is working great. Also, they retuned everything and the optics seem to work better too. Good, fast response and good clear pictures. The motor is by no means quiet, however, and this lens is probably not worth buying if you intend to shoot high-magnification video. I'd say if you get a new copy of this lens now and use an EOS R camera you should be fine. Great lens for this camera. A really great all-in-one all-in-one lens. A lens I could certainly use as my main lens on a trip abroad. It really is that good, especially when combined with some great post-processing software. If you're a regular user of the EOS system, you shouldn't have any problems with the current or older version. EDIT: 14 months since my last edit (and correction). The lens still works perfectly. Everything is sold with the latest firmware at the moment, so you shouldn't have any problems with any of the "R" family cameras. So far I haven't seen any really better options in Superzoom for "R" cameras. Canon released the native RF mount at a fair price, but the zoom range is noticeably smaller and it has serious problems with vignetting and distortion at the widest angles. You'll get this to some degree with any superzoom lens, but at least it's not that big of an issue. Also, it works great with "R" cameras with an adapter and also does double duty with any EF lens cameras you might have. So I still think it's the best choice for R camera owners looking for an all-in-one, single-lens solution.
