I work in a historic building in DC with not very good plumbing and a hard water cooler that I have to fill my bottle from, it's better than the faucet but still has that slightly sharp dirty metallic look Colour . Aftertaste. Within about a minute of placing this small filter bag in a 40 ounce bottle, the metallic taste is completely gone. I don't know how to explain this, it doesn't sound funny, but I'm very happy with the product and will buy it again when it wears out. We've used the same filter pack in about ten refills of a 40-ounce bottle so far, and it still seems very effective at neutralizing nasty water qualities at work. Had a little powdery residue before first use but I didn't rinse before use and didn't notice sand or anything in the water. Update: Having used this product for the past few months I have a couple of things to say: This is the third time I have purchased this product - I find it to be consistent and impressively effective in improving taste (and therefore quality ). Water I drink at work and at home. With regular use (about 2 fills of a 40 ounce bottle for 4-5 days per week for me) the filter is very effective for about two to three weeks and you will gradually notice the improvement in water taste in the third and fourth week subsides . So I use about 1 filter a month, 2 if my husband uses it too. Finally, I don't have to remove or dry the filter between uses. I've sometimes set it aside to wash my hydroflask bottle but then immediately put it back in the water and didn't detect any smell or odor to indicate it might be going bad, mold or mildew. That makes sense given the mineral base, but is just an additional observation.
