Review on πŸ“§ Mailiya M.2 to PCIe Adapter - High-Speed Nvme PCIe to PCIe 3.0x4/x8/x16 Adapter with Heatsink Solution - Supports M.2 PCIe (M Key) 2280, 2260, 2242, 2230 (E601) by Christopher Lance

M.2 SSDs need a heatsink even on desktops/workstations with good airflow.

I purchased this item because I figured I didn't need a card with a heatsink or fan as my HP Z420 Workstation has a lot of airflow through the case. I was wrong! I connected this adapter to an Intel 660 2TB m.2 NVME and within an hour my SSD was overheating and shutting down thanks to Intel Thermal Protection while copying over 460GB of files from my gaming hard drive. Thanks to Intel for saving me from this error. I removed the case cover and ran the box fan straight into the case at high speed at my home office temp of 72F, waited a bit; then restarted my computer. Ah yes. It still works; I didn't burn it! I downloaded the Crystal Disk information tool to check the temperature of my hard drives and lo and behold; Even in standby mode when the drive was not in use, the temperature was 91F/33C. I started copying files again while Crystal Disk Tool was still running. After about 5 minutes the temperature jumped to 105F/41C. This is absolutely ILLEGAL! I won't even try to return this card for the amount I paid for it but I'll take it as a lesson learned! I ordered a JEYI adapter with heatsink(s) and fan that claims to be compatible with Intel 660 SSD.
