I can't speak to Carbon. I usually buy the regular version, but with all the wildfires I've decided to stock up on some extras and see what the carbon can do. MERV 12 filters do a good job of removing smoke particles from the air. We tested air quality (AQI) in the 600s, when anything above 300 is considered hazardous and less than 20 is usually normal; so very bad as if you can't see a block down the street. Since I installed a new filter, I expected improvements regardless of the type. Maybe the charcoal removed some smell, not sure. The air in the house seems good. I like this brand, the filters are well made and at a very good price. I can get these 2 packs for less than a filter locally. Depending on who packs the shipment, sometimes the shipping label is stuck onto the two-pack box, sometimes the box is placed in an Amazon box. I had a few battered boxes but the filters survived. I think I'm lucky in that regard. I really like that there is a lot of space on the sides of the filter so I can write installation dates and other notes in large letters. Helps me determine when to replace (more often during wildfire season). If I forget to have spares on hand, I successfully vacuum them and extend their lifespan by a few more weeks. This usually indicates how well made the filter is.
