We've been using the Brita jug for years, but we knew we needed a whole house filter for three main reasons: (1) always because of the faucet and without waiting for the Brita to fill up, (2) remove chlorine from shower and bath water and (3) remove sediment and "dirt” from our water. Ultimately, it was point 3 that pushed us over the edge when city water kept clogging your kitchen faucet and it was too tiring to go back under the sink and fix the faucet. We knew we didn't need a water softener: we wanted to remove dirt from our water and not add anything else to it. We needed a filter: to remove the chlorine taste and remove dirt. We did a lot of research and reviewed some expensive brands like LifeSource. water filter. But cost aside, none of the independent studies I found online showed they were anything but mumbo-jumbo. Also, I think we're talking about $2,000 or $3,000 per filter. After we checked it out, it really sounded like marketing crap with no science whatsoever, so we dug deeper. This Aqua-Pure system allows you to choose between particle removal only (Aqua-Pure AP810-2 (AP802-1.5-C) replacement cartridge, 5 micron water filter) - particle and chlorine removal: Aqua-Pure AP817-2 water filter replacement cartridge , 25 micron rating. We chose the latter and it worked out great. We have to change the filter cartridge every 6 to 12 months, but at $50 each, that's acceptable. The Aqua Pure system is inexpensive. It was originally made by Cuno, which was purchased by 3M. We have been very happy with 3M products in the past, so we trusted this brand. And so far it's been everything we hoped it would be. The water tastes great, it doesn't smell of chlorine and our taps don't get clogged anymore. The filter system is quite small so we just installed it on the side of the house in a convenient place to change filter cartridges. If you live in a cold climate I would recommend placing it indoors to protect it from the elements. We are in California so everything is fine from the side of the house. The real cost is the installation that the plumber actually has to do. Depending on how much new copper tubing you need (depending on where you're installing it in relation to the plumbing), installation can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars. However, it is totally worth it. We are very glad we did.
