First of all, what do I need this device for? Now that Apple computers are evolving towards a minimal profile and phasing out older technologies, my last iMac was diskless. Luckily, external drives work well and are many times cheaper than they were ten years ago. This drive is simple from the start: a Y-cable gives users the choice of a USB connection or a Thunderbolt connection. After checking the drive, the first thing I did was throw it down a steep slope, but it flew out of the park: an old Japanese-format DVD that I couldn't play on any western DVD player or standard PC disc reader. played without fanfare. I should note that originally I plugged in the USB port of this device and my iMac did not recognize the device. I switched to Lightning port and it worked fine. Overall, I've had a more consistent experience with the Thunderbolt port than with USB. The problem is that my computer only has two Thunderbolt ports available, and I need them, so I can't leave it plugged in like that. Everything is also fine with USB, I wrote aside this first experience. When I started writing this article, I was copying a 4GB DVD to a computer with a USB port. It looks like it will take around 11 minutes, which is pretty typical for these discs. I imported the same DVD over a Thunderbolt connection and the speed was about the same. Burning or burning the same DVD took about 20 minutes at max x8 speed for the program I was running. You can earn different miles from different programs. I also imported two music CDs with no problems - the import took about 3 minutes. Japanese format hard drive; This drive did it smoothly and silently. Another positive point for this drive is that it does not require an external power supply. Some drives use a secondary power cord with a "bricked" transformer to plug them into a wall outlet, or use a dual-channel or USB connection to get extra power that way. Sometimes it is a problem to disconnect the additional power supply from a laptop. This is a solid device - no noticeable heating or stuttering out of the box. What can this product do better? It would be nice to be able to increase read and write speeds, but this may not be possible with modern media and hardware.
