Review on πŸŽ₯ Rode VideoMic Camera Mount Shotgun Microphone: Enhanced Audio Quality with Rycote Shock Mount by Latasha Pizzino

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Dirty sound, cheap plastic, almost inaccessible DIP switches.

Very disappointed with the sound quality. Other reviewers who called it "dirty" were right. I have a Tascam DR-05 version 2 digital recorder that I paid $80 new for at Revain and the pair of built in mics sound much better and there are 2 of them. I wasn't expecting a pencil capacitor. The DIP switches for setting the pad are very tiny - I couldn't see them without magnification - and very difficult to reach even with the battery removed and with a jeweler's screwdriver due to their position and set angle. I need to be able to use the pad when recording live music and turn the pad off to record dialogue. This is an extremely difficult nuisance with this device. When connected to a Samsung Galaxy S8 via a TRRS adapter cable, the sound quality was worse than with the built-in microphones. The only benefit was that the pad could record live bands without distorting the bass. The coiled and fixed cable was also an issue when my phone was mounted on a stabilizing gimbal, the tension on the spool kept the phone off balance. I love Rode's home studio. Recording mics, my NT1A is a gem but this mic isn't even true at a third of the price. I bought an Audio Technica AT8024 and it sounds a lot better, is noticeably less bulky and offers both stereo and mono recording. Yes, it's more money, but if you have a DSLR and buy a product like this (in other words, you care about quality and are willing to pay more for it), then I think it's a pointless purchase. this microphone instead of AT.
