I use these in my car as a phone holder (I attached a thin metal plate to my phone case) and even in the rough terrain they hold my phone firmly in place. I used one in my garage so I can place my phone in a safe place at any height or toolbox surface while I work on jeeps. I also use it on my jeep and work underneath or in it to have my phone handy at any angle (like changing the oil, differential fluid, brakes, etc.). Extremely versatile. Limited by your imagination and metal surface! Now I have 4 of them.
