Review on πŸ”Œ Logitech Harmony RF Wireless Extender: Discontinued Exceptional Connectivity Solution by Elizabeth Anderson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Fixed bugs - on some units

I was a little wary of purchasing the 890 that comes with the RF extender based on several reviews showing how difficult it was to find the extender to disconnect the device for reprogramming . IR modules and power cords now have connectors to connect to the base unit, so they can now be easily disconnected. Previous reviews have suggested that's not the case, so it looks like Logitech is listening! As mentioned in many places, the documentation is pretty much useless. For example, to a beginner, it may not be clear that you can connect IR remote controls and attach them to any component without additional programming. The RF Extender simply transmits the same signals to all IR devices simultaneously - yes! I had to fiddle around a bit to get the 890 to talk to the RF extender - again, a little documentation would have been nice as the 890's script display didn't help much at this point. I didn't quite catch the tech support call, but I was close. Finally, while the RF Extender can support up to 8 devices, it does so with up to four pairs of IR remotes. Two IR modules are attached to the end of the cable. You can separate them about two feet apart. I haven't seen any issues with how well they fit. The adhesive seemed to be quite strong, especially when using 1" mounting pads. The only problem I had was accidentally running a cable through my CD player's tray. I had to remove the wire and go down from the top of the player. Removing the IR panel wasn't easy so I doubt they will come off on their own. Now the most pleasant. Once it was plugged in and talking to the 890, it worked flawlessly! I can point the remote anywhere, keep it under the covers when it's cold, sitting behind the furniture about 30 feet from the kitchen - it just works! I will buy Harmony 1000 and RF Extender for my seniors. then relatives of relatives who can't remember how to switch between film and television. Extension Cable - Must be purchased separately, unlike the Harmony 890. When purchasing the RF extension cable separately, the power cord did not come with a connector next to the base unit as it did when shipped with the 890. Hard to believe . Logitech will be shipping different versions of the RF Extender, so we're assuming they're stocking up now. Be careful, at least in the short term you may or may not get an outlet. Also, when you bought the RF extender, it didn't come with 1" square standoffs to hold the IR emitters in place. They came with kit 890. Hopefully it's a stock rebuild. Update 2/12/08: I'm writing another review of the Harmony 1000. It was having serious problems connecting to the RF extender. One day it works, the next day it stops sending. Back to Revain for a replacement (it was great Revain service!). I received a replacement and saw that a Harmony 1000 with the RF Extender had already stopped transmitting. I have to remove and reinsert the battery to reset the 1000. Then it works again. Too bad because otherwise it seemed like this device worked for my older relatives. Please note that this is a problem with the Harmony 1000, not the RF Extender!
