Not effective enough

The main reason I was interested in this model does not satisfy. The spring tension is too high and does not travel long enough. On a lighter dog the cushion effect would probably not even be noticed, and on a heavier dog the distance the spring travels would end pretty quickly. When I pull on it myself, I have trouble even feeling the spring working. There at least needs to be 2 springs on this product but even then I'm afraid the tension would tighten up too soon to stop potential injury. Maybe I'm too cautious because, in fact, my dog did injure his neck maxing out his cable before. I ended up attaching a short bungy-type cord on one end and that has worked well. The difference is the bungy cord gradually increases tension and signals to the dog he is at the end of his cord. This spring does not provide enough gradual tension buildup to effectively, and safely, stop a dog from jerking his neck at the end of his cord. The spring is better than nothing, but I think the idea is not well executed. It needs a softer and longer spring.Other issues I have some concerns about are 1, the red plastic covers at the cord ends do not stay in place. They slide down the cord and, thus, do not keep the rust-prone exposed wire ends covered, and 2, the metal end clasps seem cheaply made. The part your thumb slides open and close is loose and tilts outwards quite a bit. I don't have any confidence this will stay in place under pressure or long term use.In summary, this one needs to go back to the drawing board.

Pros
  • Very sturdy design, great price for this product
Cons
  • The cable may not be strong enough to hold back aggressive dogs
