Minimum security for cable locks

My review copy came without a key; There was a broken plastic tie inside the envelope, suggesting a loose key was floating around somewhere between the manufacturer and Revane's warehouse. I thought great I can try Bell's key changer but turns out I have to write a number on the key. that I don't have. It also meant I couldn't appreciate the main light or how well it worked. Regardless, I can still evaluate its security and maybe even do a destruct test or two - something I wouldn't do with a more expensive lock. If you look down at the lock cylinder you can see that it is a traditional Yale style lock cylinder. , made of brass, and that the first key pin is also made of brass, which means that it is an easy to drill lock. Higher security locks use a hardened steel key pin. I stuck a probe into the keyhole and counted four pins - typical of cheap bike locks and padlocks. While bike thieves rarely, if ever, pick locks and prefer to use things like hacksaws and bolt cutters, I've tried hacking to satisfy my own curiosity. I immediately noticed that there is a fairly powerful return spring, which makes the choice a bit difficult. That speaks for this castle. I decided to start with a simple hook attack, pressing a hook hook against the back of the cylinder, applying slight rotational stress to the cylinder, and pulling the mandrel out, hoping the pins would bounce where they would catch. This usually works with low tolerance, cheap locks, and it actually only took me one try to pick it up. appropriate. It turned out to be mild steel that was compressed and spot welded (see photo). A file check confirmed that it was not hardened. The next challenge was to cut the cable with a hacksaw, which took just over twenty seconds with a worn saw blade. To be honest this is a very cheap lock and for less than twenty you don't expect real security. Dollar. This is good for deterring someone from driving away on your scrap, borrowing a lawn mower, or slowing down a determined thief. If you have a bike that you really want to protect, you'll need to spend significantly more.
