Everything started well, but then total failure

I bought this as a chest for our stable. They were never exposed to the weather, but were always kept in a latrine in the barn. At first they ran well and did their job. In less than six months, part of both transoms was badly corroded. Aesthetically it looked terrible right on the front of the trunk, which I spent several hours trying to pull off. I've since taken them off and thrown them away. I'll look elsewhere for equipment.
