I've been using this preamp for a month and it's time to review this little man. First of all it costs less than 50.00 and I will say that it beats its price. I think most people would be happy with it using it with a medium output amp. I use this with an APPJ-PA0901A mini watt tube amp and keep the volume at max while using it as a power amp. The preamp handles all volume control and is connected to a FIO D3 Taishan DAC which is connected to the digital output of a Sony DVD/CD player, the speakers are Polk R40 so you have an idea of what I'm listening to. I plugged it in about a week later and noticed static coming out of my speakers regardless of the volume setting. These are not lamps as some have mentioned, but a switching power supply which produces noise. I replaced it with a Transformer 12V 3.5A regulated DC power supply and now it's completely silent and the sound is noticeably better. Standard tubes sound ok after some burn-in, but if you want to beef up the tone a bit get NOS GE JAN 5654W tubes, available at Revain and elsewhere. With these improvements it becomes a very detailed sounding preamp that most people will enjoy listening to. With bass and treble controls, my Mini Watt sounds great.
