I have a Belkin FCR-H53 Multifunction Card Reader, but this guide will likely work for similar models. The FCR-H53 reader is fast and convenient. It reads and writes at USB 3.0 speeds and can work with more than one card at a time (e.g. transfer files from SD card to CF card), which not all readers can do. I use my reader exclusively for CompactFlash and SD cards - mostly for CompactFlash. The big problem that many people talk about is that the pins inside the compact flash slot are easily bent, making the slot unusable. The pins are quite long (to get into the CF card slots), they are thin, and the slot in the reader is not precisely formed enough to hold the card in the correct position when inserted. The result is bent pins. Note that some CF cards have chamfered pin sockets to better guide the pins into the hole, while others just have sharp-edged holes that require more precise alignment of the insert. The attached picture shows how to open the case (a very simple operation) and how to straighten the contacts. Even if your Belkin reader does not have bent pins, you can follow the instructions to leave the case open so you can visually verify that the card is inserted exactly right each time. This may seem boring, but it isn't. Inserting a card takes only 2-3 seconds and you get a fast, useful and affordable reader that will serve you for many years.
