Beauty and the Beast

I shot a college baseball with a Canon 70-200 2.8 lens on a Canon 5D Mark III body along with a 2x teleconverter and was perfectly happy with the speed and sharpness of my images, but I just didn't the range to cover the outfield well. After a long search I decided on the Sigma 150-300 5-6.3 Sport and today was test day. I have a USB dock but haven't done the focus calibration ritual yet because I wanted to see what I get out of the box. In general, I was happy with the sharpness of the image and the range of the lens. I have a few useful pointers for those dealing with this type of transition. This lens is just a beast. If you've looked at any of the reviews, you already know this. It is not intended to be held in hands outside of emergencies. You need a good monopod. I used one today and will test a real gimbal head tripod tomorrow by shooting from the top of the dugout. Even with a monopod it was pretty shaky at first to follow the action with such a long lens.2. The zoom ring on the back of the Canon 70-200 is close to the camera and loose enough for my thumb to follow the action. The 150-300 zoom ring sits close to the front of the lens and is too narrow for thumb control. I had to adopt a different lens holding style to make it useful. This meant my right hand was on the shutter button and my thumb was next to the back focus button and my left hand was on top of the zoom ring. This was the best approach for several reasons. First, he held the camera lens on the monopod with downward pressure, making it more stable and stable. Second, I could turn the zoom ring with my whole hand. You can just click and drag to zoom in, but the lens is too stiff to be comfortable with quick movements. If the tension wears off over time, I might try that. I still use the 70-200 on my second camera when lighting games, so I'm still getting used to switching between lens modes. So far I think I made the right choice to buy this lens for it. Goal. My images come out nice and fairly sharp straight out of the camera and it focuses quickly. It takes a little getting used to, but I hope I'm not too old to learn new tricks. When I pause between games I explore the customization options available with the USB dock and test and calibrate focus, but so far I'm happy.
