Review on Corsair Carbide Series 678C: The Ultimate Low Noise Tempered Glass ATX Case in Black by Greg Muiznieks

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Disappointing and overpriced.

As someone who keeps their old hard drives, I was looking for an enclosure on the market that offered a lot of storage space and looked good too. This case, despite its high price, seemed to fit the bill. I'm really sorry I didn't look at some of the reviews before making this decision. While well built, mostly metal and definitely solid, there were a few glaring issues. First, the powder coating near the screws had a tendency to flake off revealing the bare metal underneath. While not the biggest thing, it made a bad first impression. Secondly, although this case is suitable for a large number of drives, it looks like its protection mechanism hasn't been tested with multiple hard drives to see if it actually works. I have three mechanical drives and one SSD, all within the last decade and all with SATA power and data. If you install drives in the bays with the logo side up, the bay screws will interfere with the right-angle data cables! I couldn't physically connect the SATA cables at a right angle because the screws got in the way. If you turn the drives upside down so that the circuit board is showing, the data cables will now fit, but the power cables will be pressed against the bottom of the screws! Even an SSD was not immune to this, since the SSD cages are located on the back of the mainboard tray and flat cables are generally required for installation. Install them with the ports to the tempered glass, which would be unsightly and counterproductive. What a mistake! Didn't anyone find this while testing? In order to connect data and power cables without violence, I have to buy extension cables. Another annoyance is that the hard drive bays have covers when you remove the frames. but only 2 cases are included. So if you only have to install two cages (one under the power supply cover and one above it), you can only carefully cover two empty hard drive slots. For $200, couldn't they add four more pieces of plastic to make the interior look nice? I've seriously considered returning this, but my build is already done and the extension cords are on their way. I will definitely think twice before buying a Corsair case in the future.
