I am brand new to keeping aquatic animals but more than a month after the launch my fish, shrimp, snails and plants are healthy and the aquarium is stable 5- Gallon acrylic aquarium kit with substrate and stone and I started the dosing cycle from day one. After a day or two I bought marimomoss and some red shrimp from a local store and added them to my new tank. Within a week of doing a partial water change every other day, my tank had trace amounts of ammonia, no detectable nitrite, and a buildup of nitrate. month for a complete cycle of a new aquarium. Took me a week of cycling and no algal bloom! I add a small cycle after the water change, but only because I have so much left (I think I bought a 16oz bottle) and the expiration date is relatively short. short because of live bacteria inside. I don't think it's necessary, but I recently bought a new filter and it certainly didn't hurt. Check it out for sure.
