All the devices I received were active and working when they arrived. No instructions needed, just wet your fingers and tap 2 tabs and the alarm will sound. The volume produced varies and is not as loud as a 10 year old Leak Frog LF001 water detector running on 3 AA batteries. The device itself is well designed. Simply unscrew the bottom to access the battery. Although the battery is tight, it's relatively easy to remove and replace. The device is about the size of a silver dollar and probably 1 1/2 inches high. I would give this five stars if it came with fresh batteries. As they come active and with the battery already installed I don't know if the batteries were put in these things 6 weeks ago or maybe 3 years have passed. I will keep and use the batteries and just test regularly.
