Review on πŸ“· Enhanced Night Vision Camera Module for Raspberry Pi - 5MP OV5647 Webcam with 1080p Video Recording by Jeho Odor

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Honest performance at a low price.

, I connected this camera to a Raspberry Pi Zero v1.3 using Raspbian Lite and used Motion to view the camera. I set it to 1280 x 1024 at 4 fps with no motion detection and no streaming over Wi-Fi. In a room with normal lighting, "dark" areas appear brighter. Up close, my hand is blindingly white. Infrared works. I watched it on my porch on a moonless night. From almost no ambient light to 40W CFL door lights, the camera produced excellent images from up to three or twelve feet away. This test was conducted with the Zero powered by a 2 amp battery which I frequently use to charge my phone and tablet. However, when I tried to run a test with a battery that only put out 1 amp, the results were disastrous. As long as the system has enough power, it's good. When this system first boots up, the camera view is very dark. However, after I restarted it, the low-light performance improved dramatically. The CCD scans very slowly. Objects in motion are usually blurry and unrecognizable. There was a constant three to four second delay between what the camera saw and what was received over the Wi-Fi connection. The signal was around 70dB, which is very strong, so it wasn't a problem. I tried increasing the frame rate from 4 to 8 fps but got multiple connection refusal messages in the web browser when trying to connect to Zero. As soon as I lowered the frame rate back to 4 fps, I had a solid connection again. However, the effective frame rate I get is slightly better than 1 fps. The two IR LEDs operate at 830 nm (or 840? That's one of them) and can be seen from afar by their faint red glow. . I would like to test the camera at a greater distance with more IR LEDs > 900nm that are not lit. When I do (it will be in a few weeks), I'll update this review with the results.
