I kept getting some mucus or an oily surface on the .
My tank always got some slime or an oily surface; that clarified the situation. I'm using it with the Filstar XP-M API on 55G; of the complete rubber connectors, one is smaller and the other is a bit oversized; It has a retaining ring in the middle that I could get to stay on the API inlet and then the rest was enough to hold it to make it work. You can "adjust" the flow of the bottom grille (this one slides in/out) and mine is fully extended and seems to be working fine.
