I bought two of these to use with a Plex Server running a Mac Mini, one for the main server and one for external backup. I've filled both with WD RED NAS drives and everything works great. I'm getting around 200mb/s on each drive. Considering the WD website says the drives are rated at 180MB/s, those speeds are better than I was hoping for. It was also very easy to set up and the Mac recognized the device without drivers. I put in the first disk and named/formatted it. After doing this, I did the following. I did this for all four drives. I just put in the next disc while the unit was still on. I did this so that the drive names on the primary and backup servers not only match, but are also in the same location on the device. I'm not sure how you would know which drive is in which slot if you just plugged in and plugged in all the drives. Change discs if necessary. My experience so far has been great. The drives arrived right away, no naming/formatting issues, speed where it should be and no driver/software fuss. The drives also seem to sleep when not in use, which I like from a power-saving standpoint. This is a 24/7 server and hibernating hard drives when not in use is an added benefit. I had no problem waking her up as quickly as needed. The device is largely silent. There is a small noise when the fans are on, but there are no complaints about the sound. The build quality is good since the device is made of metal, with the exception of the plastic drive bays. It would be nice if they were metal, but if used properly they should hold up well. The box also included stickers for labeling the discs and extra feet in case they came loose. It's not a big deal, but I found it an added subtlety.
