Review on 🔧 Optimized SRAM Apex Brake Caliper Set by Alex Webster

Revainrating 3 out of 5

They are OK - Sporty

I use them with Alex RPD15 rims, they are finished (very small grooves with a deeper groove in the middle of the braking surface). I had no luck. This is my third set of calipers with these rims and they don't perform any better or worse than the others. Someone mentioned that they use Swissstops. Can't test, but they don't work very well. I can unbolt the handlebars (using the Tektro handlebar arms on the megaphone rig) and secure the arm, but I can't even come close to lifting the rear wheel. Sometimes I have problems with the rear wheel locking up. My particular setup suffers from brake fade on long descents. I'm not going to blame the calipers, or even necessarily the pads. The calipers look good (there are no exposed pivot pins like on other double-pivot calipers), they have a sleek shape but an annoying screen print that detracts from the overall look (why don't the manufacturers go for understated appearance or stealth? ?) That biggest annoyance is that the cable release levers become stiff after less than 50 miles. Instead of the cam moving the cable and keeping it in line with the body, it's actually trying to rotate the cable. I will disassemble, clean and re-grease the cable pivot (looks nice, has a small hex screw). These aren't bad calipers, but there's nothing magical about them. Don't switch to them if you already have working calipers. . Just buy them if you don't have a caliper.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • All OK
