I have a 2001 325ci Convertible (E46). Bought my car in the US, probably in condition that doesn't need a faceplate so has never been drilled into. A front seat is required where I live in Canada. So far I've attached zippers to the bottom grille (Figure 1). This license holder is very neat and easy to install. There is a 2.25 inch gap between the bumper and the back of the license plate (Figures 2 and 3). Pros: 1. Looks good (see pic 4) 2. Still easy to install aside from the lack of instructions 3. Lots of mounting position options so you can find the right one that best suits your car and personal preference I give no 5 stars because what: 1. No instruction manual It's really easy to install but it took me a few minutes to figure out where to put the couple of rubber washers that came in the box. 2. The support rod can be adjustable in length. 1 (After a few months of use): When you mount the main platter to the rack through the side brackets (i.e. off-center), the platter weight torque moves the whole structure with daily vibrations. The screwdriver isn't nearly strong enough. The included rubber washer is useless and crumbles as soon as you try to overtighten it to keep the plate from spinning from the car's vibrations. The solution is to use a regular screwdriver to tighten as much as possible and then use your hands to move the end of the plate holder while applying some torque to it. Hopefully the screw will move with it (use a screwdriver to help) until you feel the mount is fairly tight, otherwise it's only a matter of time before the plate tips over on the heavier side. I haven't tried it, but maybe using a spring washer (split washer) instead of the cheap rubber washer they give you should fix the problem. Or go to your local hardware store and buy a better quality screw or hex head that can be torqued more than the useless Phillips head screw they include. Update 2: It looks like the license plate holder material is not very strong. Since I applied torque (Update 1) to prevent the plate from moving when vibrating, the material broke apart after a few months into that time. I had to take it off and put it in another hole. What I originally installed isn't junk (Figure 5). Bottom line: I still recommend using it instead of drilling the front bumper unless you can find other alternatives.
