We were successful, your mileage may vary.

We have an Australian Shepherd. Not the smartest breed, but pretty high on the "official" list (made by "official" people). He was 9 to 10 months old when we got him. It only took us 2 or 3 paw swipes before opening the door to let him out. He started hitting him because he knew we would react to it, but it took him longer to learn to hit him when he went to the potty. Just a bit of wisdom from our experience, we thought he potty trained him fairly quickly afterwards. . You have to understand that the beagle we had before only had 2 accidents and he found out. The Beagle also had a dog door so we thought our Aussie was behind schedule in comparison. Well, he started to "relapse". It actually took him more time because he played until the last second, stopped playing (really looked like a kid who dropped everything and said "Oh NO!") and he pissed halfway to the door. We regularly let him go again if he doesn't ring the bell himself. Just remember this is a good tool but there are probably a million and 1 ways to use it. You just have to find out which way is your way. And dogs.

Pros
  • Best in his niche
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
