I've recently started using dual layer DVD burners on my home computer. Depending on the file size, you get up to 10 hours of high-quality video on 1 double-layer DVD+R. It's better than 4 hours DVD-Rs. For my home TV recording system with Panasonic DVD-R hard drive, I only use Sony DVD-R discs. I was very happy with the quality and reliability. Remember that a DVD-R that deteriorates when left unused will become unplayable after 2-5 years. I saw this with the first TDK DVD-Rs recorded over 7 years ago. A closer look at the dual layer recordable DVD+R market reveals that some major manufacturers still have serious quality control issues. The first dual layer disc I bought was from Sony and it had excellent write speeds (23 out of 25 discs were recorded with no problems). The next pack I bought was Memorex and they had a great burn rate too (14 out of 15). I think these speeds are acceptable for now, but you should still expect 100% write speeds. Finding dual layer discs in local stores is not an easy task, if you are lucky you will find 2 brands to choose from. They are also mostly sold at a premium price ($1.20 to $2.00 per disc). Finding a quality manufacturer is the next consideration as you want to make sure you don't release coasters. The goal is to buy a quality disc with a lot of quality control. Remember that once you open a pack, no store will take it back due to the frequency of marriages. Finally, there is write speed. When I burn a disc on my computer (using HP with Vista) I set the burn speed to the lowest speed which is 4X. I think this has a significant impact on a successful recording. When I ran out of Memorex discs, I couldn't find any locally and ended up with 25 packs of Kodak Dual Layer DVD+R discs. Boy was that a mistake! The failure rate is almost 65% at the lowest speed. This is now pure quality control garbage! I don't understand how acceptable that is for Kodak. When the Kodak burn failed (usually at the beginning) I inserted Memorex and the burn was successful. So, despite the bad customer reviews, I bought a pack of Revain's Memorex 50. The price made it cheap (0.53 cents per disc), although I have to admit I was concerned the DVD+R would be mailed. But no problems, they were well packed and there were no coasters yet. If you're considering a customer review and you're unhappy with a product, you're more likely to write a scathing review. The burner, operating system, disc quality, burning speed, and software all affect your results. In any case, I am very satisfied with the 50 pack Memeorex Dual Layer DVD+R. Given the quality and price, why not give it a try!
