I used a bioactive and inert black diamond substrate to set up a new 20 gallon freshwater aquarium. As stated in the product, my pool was ready to use immediately, for the first two weeks I checked the water parameters every day. I planted the fish in just 24 hours and never once experienced a nitrate or ammonia nitrite spike, my fish quickly adapted from the aquarium shop to the newly installed aquarium. The tank had an initial bioburst which I worried about because the tank wasn't driving, but I had no problems. This substrate is not suitable for plants, it is too easy and difficult to plant in an already established aquarium. But the plants are fine too. It should be noted that the filter I used came from an already established tank that had a lot of good bacteria in it. Therefore, it is difficult to say whether the bioactive substrate did its job or whether the filter provided the cycle.
