I bought this set and the Lego power supply so my son can get his creations moving. I found that the regular Technic parts we had were not enough for a reliable drive. The play in them (yes they wear out) would cause the gears to jump out of alignment. Also, our floors don't seem consistent with a wheel drive since cars will never go straight. This good differential setup solved all my problems. The only thing REALLY weird about it is the 5 "bumps" in the transverse area. As most people know, there can only be an even number of Lego bricks. So you end up building a fairly large vehicle to compensate for this device and engine to provide symmetry.
