I use 0.5mm and 1.5mm thick sheet metal as heat transfer layer with aluminum heat sinks placed on two metal case devices - one of which is a subwoofer- Plate amp driving a bass shaker and the other is a cable company DVR which gets very hot. Because these thermal pads are easy to remove, they're ideal when you want to keep your devices' surface and internal temperatures down by dissipating heat either passively with a heatsink or with a silent electric fan on top of the heatsink. I use heatsinks coupled with silent fans and both units have seen a drop in surface temperatures from around 34ยฐC (94ยฐF) to 28ยฐC (80ยฐF). When the fans are off the heatsinks feel fairly warm, but when the fans are running for half an hour the heatsinks feel fairly cool with minimal airflow around the fins.
