So printer ink is expensive but essential even in our paperless society, but Brother has started to do the same tricks as HP. Once the ink cartridge is empty, printing will not work (at least on the latest MFPs from 2011 and newer). Do not scan, fax or print (even if this color is not used). If this happens to you, you can "trick" the printer by covering the clear plastic of the cartridge with colored tape. You can see the area to be covered by looking at the float arm in the cartridge (turn it upside down and you'll see it come and go). Put the cartridge back in and the printer will register that the ink is full as it thinks the float arm is up and you're done. Be careful if you don't use a small amount of ink automatically as the heads will be cleaned automatically. If the device is not used for a long time, the printheads become clogged with dried ink. The built-in "heavy" cleaning may not work to clean the heads. At this point, you'll either have to find a way to manually clean the heads (see YouTube) or just throw the printer away. I went the last route and now I have a laser printer - no more ink for me. I believe if you need to buy ink it's best to get these 2 packs of large refills if you don't want to try your luck at ink refill shops. This has turned out to be the best value for me.
