Used with turtle tanks as the first stage of a canister filter. Does exactly what it's supposed to do, randomizing the water flow and catching larger debris before it reaches the smaller filter stages. Easy to clean by shaking and rinsing and can be reused almost indefinitely. I used to use bio-rings as a combined mechanical and biological medium in a first step. Now I have a separate biological stage and this media does a better pre-filtration than biorings. You get a lot in the box, so unless you have a huge filter, you've got a lot of extra stuff.
