Review on KEF LSX Black Wireless Music System: Exceptional Sound and Seamless Connectivity (Pair) by Owen Blanco

Money isn't worth it

When I bought the LSX wireless system I was happy to compare it to the Audioengine HD6 and Kanto YU6 that I had. On arrival, not only were the speakers packaged without the necessary foam holders (just a thin layer of bubble wrap!), but the sound was no better than wireless units at 1/3 their price (YU6). I would describe the very clean sound of the LSX as great, but they completely lack any mid-range boom. Bass is definitely present in the form of rubble at the lowest end, but bass is absent at the top end. The "middle" of the listening experience is missing. When I tried to explain how I thought they sounded compared to other speakers, I said they looked like a snowman with a tiny ball in the middle and a huge head. If you love acoustic performances with clear and open vocals, this is for you. But if you like the richer sound of classic rock, alternative, hip-hop or EDM, then the Audioengine HD6 sounds much better and at half the price. To be honest I thought the Kanto YU6 sounded very similar and they were 1/3 the price. Their top and bottom ranges sounded very similar, and I don't think you can justify the similarity of $1,100 speakers for $399 similarity. The LSX price would have been more reasonable at $699. A final point that helped ease the return of the LSX Wireless was that the AUX input required a 3.5mm to RCA cable and there was a harsh/loud buzz when plugged into all three jacks. I tested phono stages (TCC, NAD, Yaqin). There was no hum at all when using the same 3.5mm to RCA signal on HD6 or YU6. As a result, it was impossible to listen to vinyl on my turntable (Project Debut Carbon DC).

Pros

Cons
