I didn't detect any smell. A few days after application, I checked the waterproofness with a faucet test - I turned on the faucet and let the water run. The water flowed like water off a duck's back. However, I don't know how the conditioner stands up to a long soak. It's easy to apply with the included fuzzy applicator. Be careful. Smear it in the container because it has a lot of conditioner in it. It would be very easy to apply too much. I allowed my skin to dry for about five days until the solution fully soaked into the hardened (aged?) holster I'm trying to rejuvenate to fit a slightly different gun than when it was made. The 8 ounce size is enough for a holster, a belt, a pair of boots and a few other small items. There was some darkening of the tan skin so please note that color matters. For my taste, darkening improved the optics.
