Review on TERRAMASTER F8-422 10GbE NAS 8-Bay Network Storage Server Apollo Quad-Core CPU With Hardware Encryption (Diskless) by Jose Wititsuwannakul

Great hardware but not a very good OS

First off I received an F8-422 which failed after 120 days of use. I'm sure this was a rare occurrence and Terramaster support was responsive, helpful and sent me a replacement as soon as I shipped the faulty unit. It's not clear which component failed, but the logs showed "CMCI Storm Detected: Switching to Polling Mode" before the system hung/shutdown, indicating there was likely a RAM or motherboard issue. The new device worked perfectly. The only thing I don't like about this product is the preinstalled TOS operating system. It's not great. If you want a ready-to-go NAS with a decent operating system, you should definitely go for Synology. However, if you have some know-how and patience, simply pop an SSD into the first slot, FreeNAS (now TrueNAS CORE), UnRAID or, if you're more of a DIY enthusiast, Ubuntu and change your BIOS boot settings to UEFI, and your Terramaster should automatically boot from this SSD in the future. I think it technically violates the warranty as it says, but they have no way of knowing you ever did it unless you let them know, because even if you have to send the hardware back, you will give it to them do not send discs in it. Overall the hardware is great, handles Plex transcoding well, loves the 10Gbps ethernet port, is very easy to set up, and their support is pretty good.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Doubt
