I don't have any other precision squares to measure accuracy with so I bought that first. But I agree with another review here that says it looks like it's been rolling in the toolbox for a year. I unwrapped the "brand new" square and it was covered in dust and oil. But of the two still more egregious defects was the first. Visible oxidation so I assume it won't last very long. I think we all know that this is the worst thing that can happen to a piece of steel like this. 2. Localized and non-localized scratches are visible. Unlocalized scratches indicate that it has been taken out of the box for an extended period of time and has accumulated enough dents and scratches to be visible. Localized scratches on my last photo show that the person physically damaged the surface during use. A series of scratches on two different surfaces but close enough to demonstrate reasonable force on the surface sufficient to damage it. Intentionally or unintentionally they thought this item could be considered "new" doesn't matter. Thing is, the apparently used square was marked new and then shipped to me, and when I opened the package it was so visibly dirty and used that I giggled out loud when I took it out of the box. He's so dirty and scratched. It was annoying.
